THRACE. Abdera. Circa 530-500 BC. Oktadrachm (Silver, 24x14 mm, 10.86 g). Griffin, with curved wings, seated to left, raising right foreleg; to left, A; in field, six pellets. Rev. Rough quadripartite incuse square. Asyut -. HGC 3.2, 1125. May, Abdera, 25. Nicely toned. Circa 65 % of the flan cut off in antiquity to create 'Hacksilber', otherwise, very fine.

The cutting of Greek silver coins into smaller pieces was common practice, particularly in the Levant, where coinage was often treated as silver bullion and cut down to irregular pieces that changed hands not by denomination, but by weight.
